Dexter Community Players Serve Up First Dinner-Theater Show
by Terry Jacoby

Angela Elowsky, VP of the Dexter Community Players, didn’t have to look far to find a director for “The Fantasticks,” the local theater’s first dinner-theatre show.

“The Fantasticks is one of my favorite long-running musicals,” said Elowsky, who is directing the production which opens April 27 at Columbus Hall in Dexter. “It’s been a fixture on Off-Broadway since its first production in 1960. It is a family-friendly musical centering around a boy, a girl, and their two fathers (or in this production, mothers) who try to keep them apart… and throw in some pirates and Indians and sword fights too.”

Elowsky likes to call The Fantasticks “the musical comedy version of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.”

“This is a show where there is really something for everybody, kids included,” she said. “I’m so excited to be a part of DCP’s first ever dinner theatre. DCP has wanted to start a relationship with the folks at Columbus Hall for years now. The Fantasticks is a small enough show, and with its minimal set, it was perfect for their space. They’ve got a great banquet hall which lends itself well to performances.”

The show features eight talented actors: Brandon Waldenmayer of Canton plays The Narrator (El Gallo), Wynton Doty of Saline plays The Boy (Matt), Kyra Pazan of Ann Arbor plays The Girl (Luisa), B.J. Danner of Whitmore Lake and Abby Briggs of Dexter play The Mothers, Brandon Cave of Ann Arbor and Elizabeth Vanover of Dexter as The Old Actors and Chris Joseph of Ann Arbor as The Mute.

And with the music direction of Brian Rose, the audience is certainly in for a treat.

“We hope we get a great turnout,” said Elowsky. “We really want to continue offering dinner theater to the Dexter community.”

Dinner starts at 6:30 p.m. with doors opening 30 minutes prior. The show will begin at approximately 7:30 p.m. The buffet-style dinner will be served by Cheaney’s Catering and include chicken marsala, vegetable lasagna, roasted potatoes, green bean almandine, tossed salad and bread.

Tickets for the April 27-28-29 shows must be purchased in advance at the group’s online box office.
